TOPIC:
Container disposal in the new yellow trash cans in Delicias neighborhood (where the high school IES Ramón y Cajal is located).
From it, we can extract 4 subtopics, namely, the objects we could create with the plastic before throwing it to the yellow bin, the different locations where bins can be placed, how often the trash should be picked and the places where the plastic from the yellow bins in Delicias end up.
CONTENTS:
The goal of this project is to create an poster in which an image from a community, landscape or animal affected by plastic abuse or misclassification (like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, toothed whales or the garbage crisis in Naples, Italy) are combined with a quote or short piece of information about one of the many disadvantages that not recycling can have, together with a powerful appeal to classify waste in the different bins. These sentences are going to be written in English with their translation to Spanish.
The posters are going to be placed in the “general trash” or brown bin, and the audience to whom they are addressed are those people who still do not separate their waste.
This project is going to be carried out by the second graders (2ºCSE).There are 5 main contents that are going to be dealt with:Written production: Request and offer of information, directions, opinions and points of view, advice, warnings and notices.
Oral production: Description of qualities of objects, places and activities.
Written comprehension: Commonly used written lexicon (reception) related to the environment.
Oral comprehension: Mobilization and coordination of their own general and communicative skills in order to effectively carry out the homework.
A word bank of 15 words about the environment, the city and the waste management processes.
Therefore, with this project we are developing many of the 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, collaboration and communication with classmates and with the nearest community. As we can see, there is also a focus on inquiry and innovation.
DRIVING QUESTION
How could we make neighbors from Delicias neighborhood aware of the importance of the new yellow trash bin?
COOPERATIVE TECHNIQUES
To develop this project, several types of grouping are going to be used, but the most recurrent is going to be the 4-person-grouping.
Although it is often that we have to wait and see how the project evolves to choose a specific technique or another, there are 3 that fit perfectly in this project.
The first one is “idea assembly” which is a variant of the brainstorming technique created by Faickney, A., that is going to be used to find the first ideas about the ways of making people aware of the use of yellow bins.
The second one is the “1-2-4 technique”, created by Kagan S. and Pujolás, P. which is going to be used to find ideas for pictures to include in the posters.
The third one is the “shared listening”, as a variant of Pujolas’ “shared listening” technique, in which the students are going to ask questions to each group that is presenting their poster.
