THE PERFECT AMUSEMENT PARK

LEVEL: 1º ESO First of all, the teacher should think about the main reason to create this project, in this case, it is to propose something new.

Secondly, it would be important to connect the project to the teacher and students´ community. For instance, there is no amusement park in our city and we want to design one.

Thirdly, we should bear in mind the audience this project is for: visitors to the city or people who like adventure and have a good time.

Finally, the product is to design a poster of the perfect amusement park. The teacher will use the think-pair-share cooperative technique.

He /She will tell the students to imagine a perfect park, engage them and activate their prior knowledge asking them a few questions:

What is there at this park?

What can you do there?

What are some of the things you can´t do there?

The students will discuss in pairs or small groups working together to learn alongside their peers, rather than individually (cooperative learning).

Then, they will share their answers with the rest of the class. This technique contributes to more student participation and motivation. After that, the teacher will have them think about the items that they might find at a really fun park. This way, some of the new vocabulary will be introduced:"rides", "rollercoaster", "big wheel", "circus", "bumper cars"(CALP: content academic language). A driving question, that is to say, a goal will be bear in mind: how could we design the perfect amusement park?

They will draw the rides and places in the park and then they will list the rules of their park using: "You can / can´t", "you must /mustn´t".

They will design signs posting the rules of the park using the imperative. (Grammar focus: modals and imperatives). Have them think about the following questions related to design thinking:" Who will be reading these signs?" "What should be on these signs?" "Are there any limitations or special needs?" Brainstorm what could be included. Once the students have designed their own poster, they will present it to the class. The teacher will draw up a rubric for the project assessing the following areas: organization, content, teamwork and presentation. On doing this project students will be developing the 21st century skills: critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication.
