I am going to plan my pbl for the municipality of Coca, in the land of pine forests, Segovia (Spain). Subject: Biology and Geology Topic: Forests and climate change Contents: 1. Greenhouse effect and global warming 2. Evidences of climate change 3. Consequences of climate change 4. Fight against climate change Video: "Climate change: a short film"
Driving question:
How would climate change affect pine forests? Cooperative techniques and methodology:
1. Look, think and wonder: the first session (1 or 2 hour maximum) will be devoted to promoting the participation of students. Teacher will show students some pictures about the effects of climate change. They will present their ideas about climate change and their attitude facing this phenomenon. In order to solve this task, students will answer the next questions: what do I know about...?, what do I wonder...? and what am I doing...?.
2. Group research: in computers room, using the tool Google Earth. Students will map the forests on their region and will look for some important events (fire,...) and relevant information in internet and newspapers. They will compare the effects of climate change in their region before and after the event.
3. Presentation of the results (final product): a poster, they will show the impact of climate change has on the environment around them. It will include at least, one map "before" the event, one map "after" the event, the description of the event and one alternative to reduce the increasing in greenhouse gases. Students could make a short presentation and explain their poster in front of the rest of them.
3. Closing debate: this session (maximum 1 hour) tries to establish a constructive debate on how the knowledge acquired has influenced their way of thinking about climate change.
