DRIVING QUESTIONS: “How do chefs create a healthy meal?”

COOPERATIVE TECHNIQUES:

In this project students will have to create a menu for the healthiest restaurant in town that is about to open.

In order to do this, the class will be divided into four groups and each of them will have a different role.

• The first group will be in charge of doing some research to be able to choose the healthy ingredients and organizing them in order to create two courses and dessert.

• The second group will be in charge of deciding the quantity of each ingredient they should add to each course for it to be healthy and write down the procedure step by step putting into practice the imperatives. They will need to discuss about what they will need to add, what is a must, what they must not add and what they could add to achieve the main goal: a healthy menu. Like that they will have used modal verbs as well.

• The third group will be in charge of cooking the recipe considering what has been specified from the previous group and record it in a video so everyone in class can see it.

• The fourth group will be in charge of presenting the menu explaining the procedure, the difficulties and why they have chosen the menu cooked as a class. They will also have to estimate a price to their whole creation and create a QR code to advertise it around the school.

Each group will need to do a reflection on the part they have been assigned answering the following questions:

- How did you organized yourselves in the group and why did you decide to divide the work like that?

- What did you do well and what could you improve?

- How will you use what you have learnt in the future?

The team approach will allow students to enhance their communication, team building, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Numerous other skills such as food selection, menu costing and food presentation will be also developed as a result of the project.
